Fugen is a traditional Austrian resort right at the entrance to the Zillertal valley, with excellent access to the Hochfugen-Hochzillertal and Spieljoch ski areas – which between them offer 176kms of pistes, much of it above the tree line at up to 2500m.

There’s a variety of runs on offer, but intermediates will be in seventh heaven if they buy and make the most of the Super Zillertal lift pass that covers all the lifts and public transport in the locality. Our holiday includes 5 days of ski hosting, which means you can really explore this great ski area.

For example, you can take the gondola from Fugen up to the Spieljoch for 21kms of piste, or you can head to Mayrhofen’s ski area which is also accessible. Cross-country skiers are well-taken care of with 70kms of trails to explore. Boarders have a snow park and half pipe at Spieljoch, while Mayrhofen’s Burton ‘fun park’ has a host of features to try.

And when you’re not on the slopes, Fugen is a lively Tirolean resort well worth discovering. There are cosy bars and the odd disco tucked away in the narrow streets of the old town centre, and more at the foot of the Spieljoch gondola station. Fugen also has a Wellness Centre with thermal pools and offers curling, ice-skating, tobogganing and snow-shoeing as alternative winter activities.

Hotel Waldfriede

The Waldfriede is – by Friendship terms – a large four-star hotel which means that we can enjoy excellent facilities including a small indoor pool, sauna and steam rooms and a big terrace with great views across the resort. The spacious double rooms combine traditional Tirolean style with modern furnishings and ensuite facilities. Most rooms boast spectacular views. The restaurant offers a great breakfast buffet and four-course evening meals – with wine – on six nights of the week. The Waldfriede is set close to the bottom of the Spieljoch ski area, which means you can ski down virtually to the front door of the hotel.
