Nile Cruise, Egypt

Nile Cruise

Beautiful, historic, warm and welcoming – the Land of the Pharaohs is a destination that everyone should visit at least once in their lives. It really is unique and the best way to enjoy it is on a leisurely Nile cruise, à la Joanna Lumley!

Travel back through time on our specially-chosen smaller ship with just 52 cabins, the MS Viking Princess. From the awesome Valley of the Kings to the Aswan Dam, the places you see and the photos you take really will stay with you forever.

Our 7-night holiday starts and ends in Luxor, with a week’s cruise along the Nile in comfort. Each day we disembark to explore the ancient sites, with expert guides to bring the past to life.

We have four winter departure dates to choose from including a Christmas holiday with Gala meals. A local Host is with you throughout the holiday and the full day by day itinerary, dates and prices are on the next pages.

Nile Cruise Optional excursions

Our cruise includes guided excursions to all the most amazing sights, from the Valley of the Kings to the Temple of Karnak, but there are also a couple of optional trips on free days.

Sound and Light Show

This multimedia show at the temple of Philae portrays the lives of the pharaohs and the history of the temples. £32

Hot Air Balloon trip

From Luxor, weather permitting, you may enjoy an aerial view of the Nile at dawn, one of life’s most amazing experiences, with the landscape and its ancient temples spread out below you. £100

Abu Simbel

The magnificent temples of Abu Simbel were saved from the waters of the Aswan Dam and moved to this site. It is well worth either a long coach ride or a short flight! £75 by road, £195 by air

Our Itinerary*

Monday

Fly from Gatwick and meet your Host for the week, transferring to our Nile Cruiser in time for dinner. The ship stays berthed in Luxor tonight.

Tuesday

As the sun rises, the ship sets off, crossing to the West Bank of the Nile so that we can visit the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s Temple, the Valley of the Queens and the Colossi of Memnon – and that’s just in the morning! A late lunch is taken onboard as the ship cruises to Esna. There’s time to soak up the sun and enjoy afternoon tea before an informal cocktail party and dinner. The ship moors at Edfu overnight.

Wednesday

A more leisurely start to the day with a visit to the Templeof Edfu after breakfast and a chance to shop for accessories for the ship’s ‘galabeya’ party tonight. Lunch on board as the ship glides towards Aswan with time to cool off in the pool, then plan your fancy dress costume… The fun starts after dinner, with prizes and games and a lot of laughs.

Thursday

Waking up in Aswan, there’s a morning visit to the High Dam, the amazing quarries and the Unfinished Obelisk. In the afternoon, there’s a trip by boat to the Temple of Philae and a sail around Kitchener’s Island in a felucca, with a visit to the Botanical Gardens there – all included in the holiday.

Friday

A free day for us, with time to read ‘Death on the Nile’ in the shade (!) or try one of our optional excursions, such as a full day trip to Abu Simbel or a half-day Nubian Village visit. The ship sails to Kom Ombo in late afternoon, with an evening visit to the Ptolemic Temple before dinner.

Saturday

A day afloat as the ship heads back to Luxor, sliding past the palm-fringed banks and with plenty of river life to enjoy from the comfort of the deck before we moor up in Luxor for the night.

Sunday

The Temple of Karnak beckons this morning, with a visit to the papyrus museum and to some wonderful perfumeries. In the afternoon we visit our last great historic site – the Temple of Luxor, followed by a stroll through the market and a final haggle for souvenirs. This evening, there’s an optional visit to the amazing Sound & Light show at Karnak.

Monday

There is no rush this morning. We enjoy breakfast and lunch onboard before disembarking to transfer to the airport and the flight home.

* Please note that changes in river levels and river traffic sometimes make it necessary to amend the itinerary. The Captain’s word on this is final!
