Friday

You’re welcome from 2pm, when your room and your Host are both ready to greet you. Driven far? Stretch your legs along the towpath of the nearby Grand Union Canal.

This is a laid-back weekend, so no need to dress up unless you want to: meet in the bar from 6.30pm, followed by dinner (with wine) at well-spaced round tables. There is plenty of room in the bar and lounge areas to chat to new people.

Saturday

After breakfast, we take a trip to Blenheim Palace, the largest stately home in Britain. This Baroque palace is a treasure-house of art and antiques and was the ancestral home of Sir Winston Churchill. We include coach travel and timed-entry tickets to the house, with free time after to explore the formal gardens; lunch is at your own expense. Using a 45-seat coach means our group (up to 25) has room to spread out.

Dinner is once again three courses with wine and good conversation.

Sunday

After breakfast we head to Oxford, city of dreaming spires and Inspector Morse. A guided walking tour picks out all the highlights, then you are free to find your own lunch and explore. Many attractions, like the Ashmolean, are free but have timed entry slots so book in advance if you want to visit somewhere specific. Stroll in open spaces like the grounds of Worcester College, or shop. Back at the hotel, there should be time for a swim/sauna before dinner and a nightcap in the bar.

Monday

Breakfast is our last group meal and you should vacate your room by 10am but there’s no rush to leave. Depending on your journey home, consider Silverstone Museum or Coventry’s Cathedral, both within half an hour’s drive.

Attractively set around a central courtyard, this modern 4-star offers spacious public areas and a super pool, jacuzzi, sauna and gym. The Daventry Court has 155 rooms and a smart deco-style Restaurant and Bar. There is complimentary WiFi and parking.

As a Mercure hotel, Daventry Court’s Covid-19 protocols range from contactless check-in and deep cleaning of rooms to hand-sanitising stations and controlled entry to leisure facilities.

The hotel is set in a residential area, with plenty of green spaces around, and both a small Country Park and the Grand Union Canal close by for attractive walks.
