Portugal, and the Algarve in particular, has become one of Europe’s go-to destinations for a golfing holiday. The likes of Sir Paul McCartney, Ingrid Bergman, countless top flight footballers and recently the England National team pay regular visits to its courses.

In 2015, close to 1.2 million rounds of golf were played in the Algarve, and 2016’s numbers are expected to soar even higher.

For anyone looking to enjoy a holiday for singles over 40, what better activity is there to unwind than a round of golf at one of the finest courses in Europe?

50 years ago, Sir Henry Cotton’s Penina Championship Course, a secluded 360-acre estate nestled between Portimao and Lagos opened and shaped the future of golf in this region.

Following the opening of Penina in 1966, 40 more courses have been created in the Algarve, many of which, are ranked amongst the highest in Europe. Amongst the best known include the Oceanico Old, Amendoiera Faldo, the Jack Nicklaus-designed Monte Rei and the Quinta de Cima.
