A theatre in Belfast has been awarded a prestigious accolade at the Northern Ireland Tourism Awards.

The Lyric Theatre was presented with the Outstanding Contribution to Tourism award at a glittering ceremony, marking yet more impressive strides Belfast has made as a tourist destination.

Opening on 1 May last year following a revamp, the theatre welcomed approximately 128,000 visitors and has also won a claimed a number of awards for both architecture and the theatre.

Lyric Chief Executive Ciaran McAuley said: ‘Belfast has received much press recently for its impressive regeneration as a city with many excellent new venues, so to win this award in such an exciting year is fantastic for the Lyric.’

Director of Arts Development at the Arts Council echoed McAuley’s sentiments and praised the venue for its contribution to the city’s tourism sector, calling it ‘one of Northern Ireland’s to tourist attractions.’
