Officials have revealed that tourism in the Caribbean is expected to grow during 2019.
The news comes from the back of a stronger than predicted performance during 2018.
The Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO), the authority that oversees regional tourism statistics and performance, is expecting the increase in growth during 2019 which is a continuation of the trend from September 2018.
Ryan Skeete the CTO’s acting director of research revealed at the Caribbean Tourism Performance Review news conference recently of the predictions. He said: “We are projecting that tourist arrivals will increase by between six and seven per cent in 2019. Similarly, cruise arrivals should expand by a further four to five per cent.”
Mr Skeete also indicated possible “significant headwinds to navigate”, including the forthcoming outcome of Brexit negotiations. However, he said with global demand for international travel expected to stay strong the outlook for Caribbean tourism was optimistic.
He also revealed that a 9.8 per cent growth during the September to December 2018 period had led to a stronger than anticipated performance. This is a positive result after months of previous decline.
During 2018 there were an estimated 29.9 million tourist visits which represent the second highest figure of travellers to the Caribbean on record. The highest figures were recorded in 2017 when approximately 30.6 million people visited the area.
