With white sandy beaches, the crystal clear Mediterranean ocean and not to mention the delicious Greek cuisine, it comes as no surprise that Greece is a popular destination for holidaymakers, including those looking for last minute singles holidays

As report on GTP, the Greek Tourism Minister Harry Theoharis announced the country’s strategic goals for the 2020 tourism season. The ministry aims to bring an influx of tourists travelling to the country this year, with the ministry hoping to see a 10% boost, as well as a 4.5% increase in the average per capita expenditure of international tourists.

Theoharis comments, “In recent years we have been seeing a gap regarding tourist arrivals and revenue; we see an increase in arrivals, but not an increase in revenue… this gap must close.”

Results of last years tourism indicate that this goal is easily attainable, as during the 11 month period leading up to November 2019, travel receipts were up 13%, and the average spending per trip had risen 8.7%.

The Tourism Minister also announced that they’re aiming to attract more tourists out of high-season in April, May, September and October. Deputy Tourism Minister Manos Konsolas explains that seasonality is a disadvantage in Greece, “Tourism in Greece must be a four-season activity and a strategic goal (of the ministry) is to extend the season,”.

GTP also reports on the country’s other strategic goals for 2020. Harry Theoharis explains one of the key aims for the upcoming year: “I cannot overstate the importance of sustainable tourism, which is at the heart of what we want to offer. This is the way for us to respond to the challenges of the 21st century… this is the way to respond to the demands of the tourist of the 21st century,” The ministry is working on the tourism infrastructure to improve sustainability, especially in hotspots for tourists such as Santorini and Zante.
