The city of Marrakech is arguably Morocco’s most loved destination for visitors making the journey to this beautiful North African country, and fans of ecotourism will be pleased to learn that the historic location is now turning its attention to becoming greener.
In November, Marrakech hosted the UN’s annual Conference of the Parties (known this year as ‘COP22’), which the international organisation describes as ‘the supreme decision-making body’ of its Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Morocco’s National Tourism Office took advantage of the conference as a prime opportunity to push the country’s ambition of becoming famous as one of the world’s foremost responsible tourism destinations.
Speaking to the ethical investment and sustainable living magazine Blue and Green Tomorrow, tourism office General Director Abderrafie Zouiten noted that the country ‘never wanted to develop mass tourism.’ He went on to explain how Morocco now intends to make the most of its chance to embrace ecotourism, through a combination of its ‘special tangible and intangible heritage’.
Marrakech will be a centrepiece of Morocco’s plans in this growing tourism sub-sector; as the Blue and Green Tomorrow article points out, the city has already been awarded ‘ISO 14 011’ certification status in recognition of its efforts towards developing its ecotourism credentials.
