Street art is taking centre stage in Rome this summer with an exhibition of works by the world’s most famous street artist, as well as the city’s largest public art project since the Sistine Chapel.
An exhibition by famed British street artist Banksy is now on display. The show features a number of sculptures, paintings and prints offered from private collections. The event will take place at the Palazzo Cipolla museum from May 24 to September 4.
Called “War, Capitalism & Liberty”, the exhibition features a print of supermodel Kate Moss in the style of Andy Warhol. There are also Banksy’s stencilled sandwich board-wearing monkeys. Although this exhibition has no official endorsement from the unknown and unnamed artist himself, Banksy has frequently gotten involved in shows in the past.
One of the exhibition curators Acoris Andipa said to AOL Travel: “This is the largest collection of work by the artist known as Banksy, a corpus of over 120 works including sculptures, stencils, and other artistic expressions, all strictly from private collectors and, therefore, absolutely not removed from the street.
“The work critically examines contemporary issues of war, consumerism and politics,” he said.
In addition to the Banksy show, another new art project was recently completed in Rome. A 1,800-foot-long, 33-foot-high work entitled “Triumphs and Laments: A Project for the City of Rome”, adorns an embankment wall along the Tiber River. With the support of a non-profit organisation, South African artist William Kentridge completed the work. He is known worldwide for his drawings, printed art and video work.
