For so many reasons, the Algarve in Portugal has grown into one of the most popular tourist destinations for British holidaymakers. Beautiful beaches, lush golf courses and plenty of local entertainment, the region has become a premier destination.

Tourism in the Algarve is breaking all sorts of tourist records. In 2015, the region welcomed its largest amount of foreign tourists ever. According to local tourist figures, the Algarve welcomed nearly 18 million guests to their hotels, with almost 10 million coming from abroad.

Because it is such great value, expectations for an even better 2016 are rampant throughout the area.

“Tourism and hotel officials are expecting another ‘remarkable year’ for the Algarve,” said Carlos Luís, the president of the Algarve’s tourism association (ATA). “The hotel sector has gradually been presenting better results in the last two years, and again this year more tourists are expected in the Algarve.”

As a perfect destination for a singles’ holiday, one of the Algarve’s greatest assets is its world-renowned golf courses. This year, the region will celebrate its 50th year of providing the best in championship golf. In 1966, the Algarve’s first golf course, Penina, opened. Over the 50 years, more and more golfers have visited its courses. In 2015, 1.2 million rounds of gold were played.

“We are honoured to be able to mark the 50th anniversary of golf in the Algarve this year and hope golfers will be part of the celebrations with us,” Luis said. “It’s just another perfect reason for golfers to visit us in 2016 as the Algarve golf industry continues to provide the very best in hospitality, accommodation and golf venues with great value and diversity.

“It should be a golden year for the Algarve.”
