Our 5-night holiday based in the cathedral city of Hereford is a breath of fresh air. This is a beautiful corner of England: a land of orchards, hop fields, lush meadows and ancient woodland on either side of the River Wye, and an official Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Hereford developed in Saxon times at the site of the ancient ford across the river. The treasures of its beautiful cathedral include a 13th century map of the world and a medieval library. We include entrance fees to unique attractions like the Cider Museum and a full day tour of the Wye Valley to magnificent Tintern Abbey.

The city’s attractive streets offer independent shops and friendly cafes as well as good food and drink, from Hereford beef to Chase Vodka plus artisan and big cider brands – after all, Bulmers cider has been made in the city since 1887.

Premiere Inn Old Market Hotel - This new Premier Inn has a prime location adjacent to the city’s Old Market shopping centre, which also has a cinema; it’s close to the Courtyard Arts Centre and only 10 or so minutes’ walk from the Cathedral. There are shops, cafes and restaurants on the doorstep.

The hotel’s bar area offers a place to gather, and Thyme restaurant has the full Premier Inn menu.

We’ll eat at the hotel, or at one of our favourite city centre restaurants on all 5 nights of our holiday, including wine.

Parking at the hotel is approx. £3.50 per night, with city centre car parks also available. For those arriving by rail, the station is half a mile away.

Check in Sunday afternoon and meet in the bar before dinner. On Monday morning we discover the Cathedral close which is home to both the 700 year-old Mappa Mundi and a Chained Library (entrance fee included). Free time for lunch (own expense) before a stroll to the site of Hereford’s vanished castle and a riverside walk via a Victorian footbridge and the Old Wye Bridge before returning to the hotel.

A second day’s city sightseeing on foot takes in the Black & White House Museum, a quirky half-timbered former shop; the city’s Art Gallery & Museum and the Cider Museum housed in the original office of HP Bulmer, the first commercial cider-makers. This is a superb visit, with fascinating displays and a cellarful of ‘cider champagne’. The shop offers over 100 ciders to buy!

Our included full day tour of the Wye Valley takes a scenic route via Ross-on-Wye, Symonds Yat and Monmouth to magnificent Tintern Abbey (entrance included) with stunning views that inspired the first Wye Valley ‘tourist’ – William Wordsworth in 1798.

Your Host has plenty of ideas for independent sightseeing on your free day. Drive east to the book town of Hay-on-Wye; west to Elgar’s Birthplace and the Malvern Hills; hire a canoe or SUP on the river, or visit one of the county’s National Trust properties.

We enjoy breakfast at our hotel every morning and include dinner with wine each night, either at the hotel or local restaurant. Lunches are not included, but there’s a good choice of cafes in Hereford and on our scenic drive in the Wye Valley.

The holiday ends after breakfast on Friday morning: a scenic drive through the Royal Forest of Dean would be the perfect end to this Wye Valley escape, before you head for home.
