We are excited to add Albania to our programme. This is a fascinating and friendly country, keen to welcome new visitors to its shores. Its Adriatic coast faces the heel of Italy, with Montenegro to the north and Greece to the south. Its cultural roots are Greek, Roman and Turkish.
The country was locked down by a strict communist regime until the early 1990s and has taken a while to catch up to 21st century living, but it is now very much open to visitors.
You’ll find sandy beaches and ancient ruins, the energetic, colourful city of Tirana and very hospitable locals keen to show that their country is a safe and friendly destination.
Your Host can arrange some rewarding day trips to places such as the Ottoman ‘museum town’ of Berat which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to medieval Kruja with its fine castle, and to Tirana, one of Europe’s most quirky capital cities.
Albania’s impossible-to-learn language is Shqip but the younger generation loves to speak English. They may shake their heads when they mean ‘yes’ and nod to say ‘no’. With the cost of living typically half that of the UK, Albania represents outstanding value for money which is reflected in our package price and in your spending money. The local currency is the Lek, with a good coffee – a national obsession – costing as little as 50p and a beer around £1.
Albania is a winning combination of coast, country and culture with a low cost of living and a friendly smile: it really is a unique experience!

The Hotel Nais Beach is in Durres, a coastal town less than an hour from Tirana. The hotel is set just one street back from the sandy beach, so there’s no need for a pool. The modern, 14-storey building has just 24 simply-furnished rooms. The small bar is a good meeting place ahead of the day’s activities, and there is a pleasant restaurant at street level. The menus reflect Albania’s culinary melting-pot with dishes ranging from Italian pasta to Albanian gjelle (slow-cooked lamb and vegetables) and Greek salads, while fresh fish is a speciality. Friendly staff man the lobby reception desk.

Durres was where the communist leaders used to holiday, with the former leaders King Zog and Enver Hoxha having holiday homes here. Today it’s a historic town, with a university and laid-back atmosphere. The hotel is less than 500m from the start of the paved promenade which runs right along the seafront and includes the striking Ventus harbour and pier. The Albanian ‘xhiro’ equates to the Italian passagiata – that leisurely early evening stroll when everyone comes out to see and be seen. The promenade is dotted with bars, cafes and shops as well as street artists and performers, so there’s plenty to do in the evening within walking distance.
Durres’ superb archaeological museum is little more than five minutes’ walk from the hotel and the well-preserved amphitheatre is only 15 minutes on foot, so you don’t have to go far for a rewarding insight into Albania’s past.
Inland, the capital city of Tirana is well worth a day trip. After the grey days of communism, Tirana has blossomed with some exciting new buildings and many of the buildings are now painted in bright colours. Albanians love their coffee and there’s a great café culture to be found radiating out from Skanderbeg Square, along with a couple of national museums that document the country’s past.
Your Friendship Travel Host, who is with the group throughout, will be glad to suggest other day trips for those who would like to explore further afield.
