This beautiful island in the Ionian Sea is a holiday paradise, popular for many years with solo travellers, yet this is the first year that Friendship Travel has holidayed in Zante!

Smaller than its sister islands of Corfu and Kefalonia to the north, Zante is a true gem, edged by superb sandy beaches and set in astonishingly clear waters. No wonder the island is a favourite port of call for loggerhead turtles, which nest on Laganas beach. Called Zakynthos by the Greeks, the name of Zante came into use during the Middle Ages when Italy held sway: their influence is still seen in the neo-classical architecture of Zante Town, where a Venetian-style fortress dominates the pretty bay. Come for a week to enjoy the sun and the sand; come for a fortnight if you really want to discover the island’s dramatic cliffs above hidden coves, its wildlife from seals to turtles, and its food and wine.

The Ionian Hill is a rare find and we were delighted to partner with this boutique 4-star for the first time in 2016.

The smart lobby has an internet corner and comfy seating which makes it a relaxing spot to wait for dinner which, like our continental breakfast, is taken in the poolside restaurant. Many of the tables are in the open-air making the most of that view – especially the sunsets over the bay – and we really enjoyed the Mediterranean-style food here, so we shall eat in on 5 nights each week, with a couple of nights ‘off’ to allow your Host to recommend local restaurants (at your own expense). The bar offers a tempting line in cocktails, as well as local beers and soft drinks.

The location is just outstanding, set on the hillside at Porto Davia overlooking the Ionian Sea, with sweeping views over Argassi around the bay to Zante Town itself.  While it will be hard to tear yourself away from this spot, the warm Ionian Sea is only about 7 minutes’ walk down the hill, where you will find sunning and swimming platforms giving access to the crystal clear water. There are also courtesy buses available from the hotel everyday to both St. Nicholas Beach and Banana Beach.

Only 1km from the hotel, or a 15 minute walk, Argassi offers a selection of shops, bars and restaurants, many of which overlook the sea. You’ll find platforms for sea access and small strips of beach with sunbeds.

For beautiful sandy beaches, take a bus or taxi south, to Vassiilios, Garakas (part of the national marine park) and famous Laganas, which at 9kms in length is hugely popular, though less crowded in early summer, when we might be lucky enough to spot a loggerhead turtle, and at the end of the season.

Zante Town is a 15 minute taxi ride. It’s well worth pottering around, with good shops, restaurants, banks etc. There is also a great range of boat trips available from the harbour.

The beautifully furnished rooms – the whole hotel was renovated ready for the 2015 season – are not huge, but well-equipped and the attention to detail at the hotel extends to choosing really comfortable beds. The 28 rooms are set in a three-storey building overlooking the pool terrace and the sea, which makes upgrading to a sea view room very tempting! Who wouldn’t want to wake up to that view every morning?
