With some locations reporting 100 per cent bookings, there have been record tourism figures for those travelling to Spain from the UK this year. In comparison to same months in 2015, numbers of travellers are up by 11 per cent in 2016.

Spanish government figures show a record 9.6 million tourists have arrived in the country in July alone – with a quarter of those travellers coming from Britain. The Barcelona region of Catalonia has seen the biggest increase in visitors this year. Other locations showing a boost were the Balearics, the Costa del Sol, and the Canary Islands.

Rafael Gallego, the president of the Spanish travel agents and tour operators association, has told The Guardian they have some areas that have seen a jump is as much as 15 per cent compared to 2015. He is happy people are choosing the sun and beaches of Spain to enjoy their holiday.

Resorts in Mallorca are reported 100 per cent occupancy through the rest of the month.

“It has been a record year here and has sparked a big political debate over whether the island is now full,” said Humphey Carter of the Majorca Daily Bulletin.

The cruise industry is fuelling much of the increases of travellers. There have been reports that as many as 20,000 cruise passengers arriving each week in Palma de Mallorca city.
