Tenerife was the top holiday destination for those escaping the UK to take a break over New Year’s Eve, according to new data.

The Guardian has published exclusive research from TravelSupermarket revealing the Spanish island as the number one most desirable holiday for singles, as well as groups, families and couples travelling abroad for the New Year.

Nearly one in five Britons booked Tenerife getaways to celebrate the start of 2016. Tenerife accounted for 8.3% of the 14.5 million searches made through the travel comparison website for the last few days of 2015 between September and mid-December.

After Tenerife, holidaymakers chose to spend the 31st in cities, with New York and Amsterdam coming in at second and third places respectively.

Bob Atkinson, of TravelSupermarket, sums up the reasoning behind a Spanish retreat for New Year’s Eve, saying: “Winter sun pretty much guaranteed, great value for money due to it being tax-free and the chance to party in the way that you want means no one is disappointed.”

Sydney Harbour or the Eiffel Tower in Paris may be more traditional spots to welcome in the New Year, but it certainly isn’t hard to see Tenerife’s appeal.
