Marrakech Reading trip
We are thrilled to offer this unique experience that combines a beautiful, vibrant city with the travellers passion for reading.
The trip organiser is Paul Wright, and the host will be himself or one of his experienced team (for February 2026 the host will be a member of Pauls team) – With over six years of experience running large book clubs in Bristol and Exeter, Paul has cultivated a deep understanding of what makes a great gathering. Since 2023, he has organised Books in Places trips, blending his love of literature and travel. The focus for the trip is on creating relaxed and sociable experiences where like-minded people can connect over books they love.
This will be an exceptional trip and reading retreat for book lovers, providing a chance to connect with fellow readers and travellers who share your passions. the book we will focus on for this trip will be ‘The Night Train to Marrakech,’ by Dinah Jefferies.
The Night Train to Marrakech is a poignant tale of family, identity, and self-discovery. Set against Morocco’s rich backdrop, it follows a young woman unraveling family secrets, navigating love and loss, and ultimately finding her voice in unexpected ways.
Included with the trip is a half day historial tour of Marrakech – Visit iconic sites like the towering Koutoubia Mosque, Dar El Bacha’s stunning riad and Museum of Confluences, and the beautifully preserved Medersa Ben Youssef. Explore the intricate details of traditional hammams, zellige tilework, and cedar wood carvings. Stroll through the 19th-century Bahia Palace and its serene gardens, then wander the winding alleys of the Medina. The tour ends at the vibrant Djemaa el-Fna square, alive with storytellers, musicians, and performers. A perfect introduction to the culture, architecture, and soul of Marrakech.
The Hotel

Itinerary
Day 1
After arriving in Marrakech for our Reading Retreat and having time to check in, we will all meet up in the evening and have a meal together to get to know each other. Our focus for this trip will be “Night Train to Marrakech” by Dinah Jefferies, which is a historical fiction novel set in 1960s Morocco.
Day 2
We will have a local tour guide for our tour of Marrakech to soak up the atmosphere of this vibrant city. We’ll start at the bustling Jemaa el-Fnaa square, absorbing its lively ambience. We will explore the enchanting souks that the characters would have walked in the 1960’s. The book vividly portrays the sights, sounds, and atmosphere of Marrakech and the surrounding Moroccan landscape and will explore the city together.
In the evening we will have a meal together where we will discuss the book “Night Train to Marrakech” by Dinah Jefferies.
Day 3
The main character in the book is Vicky, a fashion design graduate, who is driven by the hope of encountering the renowned designer Yves Saint Laurent. We won’t be meeting Yves Saint Laurent, but we will go to visit the Le Jardin Majorelle museum which is devoted to the work of Yves Saint Laurent as well as visiting the beautiful Jardin Majorelle gardens full of exotic plants and fountains (this trip is optional and entrance fees are payable locally).
In the evening we will have a meal together where we will talk about a “Book I Love”.
Day 4
Free days to relax and enjoy the hotel facilities with a book or to go on one of the many days out available around Marrakech. These include a day in the stunning Atlas mountains, a visit to the Agafay desert or a visit to the beautiful, peaceful seaside resort of Essaouira, which includes a visit to the Argon making collectives on the way.
Day 5
Depart for home.

Marrakesh is a vibrant Moroccan city known for its rich history, colorful souks, and stunning architecture. Nestled at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, it offers a sensory experience of spices, music, and art. Iconic sites include Jemaa el-Fna, Bahia Palace, and the serene Majorelle Garden.
