Ancient caravan routes link with narrow mule tracks to create the famous Lycian Way, one of Europe’s most beautiful long-distance trails. Walking the full length – around 500 kms between Fethiye and Antalya - would take a month: this holiday is a great taster for novice and experienced walkers alike. The trail winds through flower-studded meadows and pine forests to abandoned villages and coastal views. We warm up with a local hike before exploring two of the most rewarding sections of the Way close to our small and friendly hotel. Three free days during the week give you time to explore Oludeniz, enjoy a boat trip along the coast, try paragliding or enjoy independent hikes.

Your Turkish guide is an experienced hiker who is familiar with the route and sights along the way. Our two departure dates are perfectly timed to enjoy walking: it’s not too hot and the countryside is at its verdant peak.

Of-course you need to be mobile and reasonably fit to enjoy this holiday, and have a well-broken in pair of walking boots: this is not a route to tackle in trainers.

The official start point of the Lycian Way is in Ovacik above Oludeniz, so our small and friendly Forever Hotel is the ideal base for this new walking holiday. It has 19 rooms for single occupancy, a generous (unheated) pool surrounded by loungers and the atmosphere is very much like a private villa party. There’s a poolside bar and dining area, a table-tennis table, free Wi-Fi and pretty gardens with self-standing hammocks.

Our package includes a Turkish buffet breakfast each morning, and 4 evening meals each week in the hotel’s own restaurant. Wine is not included with meals but the bar offers a wide selection of alcoholic and soft drinks.

Our first hike is a warm-up walk of around 3 hours, graded as Medium difficulty. We drive to the abandoned village of Kakakoy, a UNESCO listed remnant of Greek culture. After wandering the cobbled streets of the ‘ghost town’ we make our way up into the hills and into the pine forest, emerging from the cool shade into the bright light of the coast for a spectacular view. We descend to the sea and the resort of Oludeniz to discover the natural beauty of the Blue Lagoon before heading back up to the hotel.

The second guided walk is on the Lycian Way itself, with 5 hours of hiking graded Medium/Hard. We’ll hike from west to east, from the village of Kirme and towards Fethiye which negates what would have been a challenging ascent of 450m. Instead, we’ll descend over 2 hours, skirting Babadag, the mountain which is a fantastic launch point for paragliding, so it is not unusual to see what look like giant butterflies swirling overhead! We’ll also enjoy magnificent views over the coast to the Blue Lagoon and Belcekiz Beach, and walking through wildflower meadows fragrant with herbs. Back to the hotel in time for a shower and dinner.

The third hike – a 4-hour route graded Medium – starts with a drive up to Butterfly Valley, a steep-sided ravine and nature reserve sheltering more than 100 different wildflowers and plants, and up to 100 butterfly species in high summer. This is an idyllic spot at any time of year and we’ll enjoy the view from the edge of the 300m ravine, looking over the valley to the beaches and turquoise sea far below. Walk through pine forests and descend to the pretty little village of Kabak on its unspoiled cove. There’s free time to enjoy this ‘undiscovered’ gem before returning to the hotel.
